si vede l'attività delle macchie solari nel 2000 (prima foto) e nel 2009 (seconda foto) il Sole ha cicli di 11 anni circa, il prossimo massimo è atteso per il 2012.

Da allora ci sono state alcune repliche in tono minore, la più recente nel Marzo 1989, quando sei milioni di persone nel Quebec canadese rimasero senza luce elettrica per nove ore. Uno choc da plasma di proporzioni maggiori avrebbe conseguenze ben peggiori. Ma perchè, dopo il colpo iniziale le ripercussioni durerebbero tanti anni?
