Lo scenario apocalittico dell'agenzia spaziale Usa: una tempesta solare spegnerà i circuiti elettrici e bloccherà satelliti e telefonini

Milioni di persone senza elettricità nel 2012, cibo e medicine che vanno a male nei frigo spenti, telefoni e satelliti fuori uso. Uno scenario da "day after" che potrebbe essere derubricato alla voce "catastrofismo", se non fosse che l'allarme viene dalla Nasa e dalla National Academy of Sciences. E nella parte del cattivo che mette a repentaglio la civiltà, una volta tanto, non ci sono le attività umane, l'inquinamento o il riscaldamento globale. Il nemico a sorpresa è il Sole, artefice della vita sulla Terra, che con un colpo di tosse potrebbe mettere ko le infrastrutture sulle quali l'Occidente prospera.
Da dicembre, l'attività del Sole sta lentamente aumentando. La nostra stella varia il suo campo magnetico ogni 11 anni e a un certo punto si raggiunge un picco di fenomeni (eruzioni solari e getti di massa coronale) dai quali si sprigionano grandi quantità di energia e di radiazioni. Tali getti possono raggiungere la Terra dando luogo a tempeste geomagnetiche. L'atmosfera ci protegge, gli effetti diretti delle tempeste solari sulla salute sono negligible, but their impact on socio-economic structures could be disastrous.
Astronomers observe these phenomena since 1859 when a geomagnetic storm of extraordinary proportions, in addition to making possible the observation of polar auroras like those in Italy and Cuba, he set fire to some of the telegraph wires in Europe and the United States. In May 1921, another storm caused a series of shorts, bringing down power lines and telephone across the Atlantic. But what if such events occur today that an entire civilization was founded on electricity and telecommunications?
The response of experts is far from comforting: "Electricity is the key technology of modern society, from which all others depend, and other infrastructure services," reads a 132 page report commissioned by NASA to the National Academy of Sciences. "If the storm of 1859 to happen today, we will see an enormous social and economic devastation." In 1989, six million people in Quebec were without power for nine hours due to a geomagnetic storm ten times less powerful than that of 1921. According to John Kappenmann, co-author of the report, if an event such as a repeat of '21, people without electricity this time would be 130 million.
